The next chapter of one of Southwest Florida’s fastest rising football stars is officially underway.

Bishop Verot cornerback Jyden German announced his commitment to the University of Minnesota, giving the Golden Gophers a dynamic defensive back with elite speed, proven versatility, and one of the strongest football pedigrees in the state of Florida.

Rated as a three star prospect in the Class of 2027, German chose Minnesota over finalists North Carolina and Louisville after taking his official visit to Minneapolis. The 5 foot 10, 175 pound defensive back is ranked among Florida’s top prospects and has been recruited primarily as a cornerback despite starring at multiple positions throughout his high school career.

German’s athletic ability has never been in question. Before arriving at Bishop Verot, he became one of the youngest varsity football players in Southwest Florida history, earning playing time at Evangelical Christian School as an eighth grader. Coaches immediately recognized his rare speed and maturity, traits that have continued to define his game throughout his high school career.

His track background only adds to his upside. German owns verified times between 10.5 and 10.55 seconds in the 100 meter dash and approximately 22.07 seconds in the 200 meters, making him one of the fastest defensive back prospects in the country. That speed allows him to stay stride for stride with receivers while closing quickly on the football, two qualities that made him a priority target for Minnesota’s coaching staff.

While his future will be on the defensive side of the ball, German has shown throughout his high school career that he can impact games in a variety of ways. His ability to play multiple positions, combined with his physicality and instincts, has made him one of Southwest Florida’s most complete athletes.

Football excellence runs deep in the German family.

Jyden is the son of Jammi German, one of the greatest football players ever to come out of Fort Myers. Jammi starred at Fort Myers High School before continuing his career at the University of Miami. He was selected in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons and spent four seasons in the NFL with the Falcons and Cleveland Browns.

Growing up with a father who reached the highest level of the sport has provided Jyden with daily guidance and perspective. In previous interviews, he has spoken about how valuable it has been to have someone at home who has already experienced the recruiting process, college football, and the NFL.

Now, the next generation of the German family is carving out its own legacy.

Minnesota is landing far more than a talented cornerback. The Gophers are getting an elite athlete with championship potential, outstanding speed, and a football IQ developed through years of learning from one of Southwest Florida’s most accomplished players.
