High school athletics brings such a personal energy! In professional and even college athletics, the majority of the fans don’t have an actual relationship with the athletes that they are cheering for. You know… you buy a ticket… in the nose bleeds, and act like your screams are reaching the players… and that they will actually hear your tiny little voice up there in section Z58.

High school sports are a little different though! MOST of the fans have an actual relationship with the people they are cheering for. They are in class with them, talk to them in the halls, studied with them yesterday, or just meet at the same place in the lunch line because they have similar tastes in food. Whatever it is, it’s MUCH more personal. And because of the size of the gyms, the players actually have a chance of hearing the taunting. It’s GREAT! Gives me goosebumps watching those interactions during a big rivalry game.

This photo is from one of my favorite SWFL rivalries… Riverdale vs Fort Myers! It NEVER EVER disappoints. In the photo, the other team had just hit the ball out of bounds, and the Riverdale Student sections lets them know…. YOU!!! OUT!!!!! You think the other team heard that?
